How many Years Must you Live Together to Have a Common Law Marriage?

In the state of California, there is no such thing as common law marriage, regardless of the length of time you have been living together.  In California there must be a valid marriage license for the marriage to be married.  Even if both consent to marriage and have been cohabitating for ten years, this is insufficient absent a marriage license.  There is still a potential civil action to support; however, there is no remedy in Family Law.  There is also no such thing as common law divorce in California.  Note, though, that California does recognize the validity of marriages that are common law marriages from a jurisdiction in a different state that does recognize common law marriage.  Contact Sagaria Law today to schedule an initial consultation to learn more.
